The Protestant Reformation

Why this history matters

The Reformation emerged after fifteen centuries of debate over who speaks for Christ in the Church: the bishop, the pope, the council, the prince, or Scripture. This timeline follows that argument from the first bishops to Luther, Zwingli, and those who followed.

These are not simply historical questions. The claims pressed across these centuries still govern how Christians read Scripture, order their churches, and live under governing authorities. Each era is set beside the next so that the argument can be followed in its own time, rather than reduced to a single date or a solitary figure.

To think Christian is to see our own moment in light of what the Triune God has been doing among His people all along. The timeline offers a place to begin that work of attention: to consider the voices, institutions, conflicts, and convictions that shaped the church’s story.

In partnership with Quotelos Travel, we also invite you to stand where this history happened. The places named throughout the timeline are part of the story, and travel offers one way to encounter their lasting presence.
